Meetings

Our free monthly online support group meetings are open to anyone who is interested. Most take the form of a talk by a guest speaker followed by an interactive Q&A session.

Speakers include professionals, practitioners, service providers and representatives of mental health organisations, who speak on topics related to schizophrenia and serious mental illness.

Caring & Sharing meetings are held once or twice a year and offer a space for participants to ask their own questions, share their experiences and perspectives, or simply attend and listen to the input of others.

Upcoming meetings are advertised on our website, in our monthly newsletter and in the Cape Town community newspapers.

My life with schizophrenia

An online talk by

Chrisna Steenkamp

Client Relations Coordinator

Takealot, Cape Town

We are pleased to welcome Chrisna Steenkamp as guest speaker at our May meeting. Chrisna will talk to us about what living with schizophrenia means for her. Now 26 years old, with her diagnosis almost 12 years behind her, Chrisna lives and works in Cape Town.

Passionate about sport, and an avid cricketer in her schooldays, little did she know that an unfortunate incident on the sports field in the early years of high school would result in the onset of schizophrenia and bring about far-reaching changes in her life.

Chrisna will describe how she was able to meet and rise above the challenges posed by the illness at that crucial stage of her development. Her story is an inspirational one, as, over time, she came to terms with her diagnosis and rebuilt her life with the support of family, friends, professionals and the right medication.

Chrisna matriculated in 2016, then successfully completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology.  After a year as an intern with the non-profit organisation Change Makers Hub, Chrisna joined Takealot and has worked there since 2021.

She is once again playing cricket, and has represented u/19 girls as well as the senior ladies Western Province cricket teams where she has participated in multiple tournaments across the country.

Chrisna explains that her experiences have made her into a mental health advocate with a desire to give back: “I have a big passion for mental health and creating awareness and having open conversations with others in the hope to reduce and eliminate all stigmas. I am always looking for new opportunities to improve my life and provide value to others.”

We are very much looking forward to her talk and encourage you to join us if you can. Click on the button below for the Zoom link.
